Synopsis: Unstoppable is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion.
I first heard of Anthony Robles on ESPN’s SportsCenter, where his incredible journey as an NCAA wrestling champion—overcoming the odds with one leg—captured the world’s attention. His viral videos were nothing short of inspiring, so when Unstoppable was announced, I was immediately intrigued. Sports dramas often hinge on their ability to balance grit with heart, and Unstoppable delivers on both fronts. Directed by William Goldenberg and based on Anthony Robles’ memoir Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion, the film is an intense and deeply inspirational story. Here’s why I highly recommend it:
Jharrel Jerome Anchors the Film with a Standout Performance
Jharrel Jerome’s portrayal of Anthony Robles is nothing short of transformative. Jerome doesn’t just play Robles; he embodies him. From Anthony’s struggles and frustrations to his moments of triumph, Jerome delivers a performance that feels raw, authentic, and utterly compelling. Whether he’s grappling on the mat or wrestling with self-doubt, Jerome makes every moment resonate.
Jerome’s dedication to the role is evident, especially in the wrestling sequences, which are physically intense and emotionally charged. Training with Robles himself clearly paid off, as these scenes feel incredibly lifelike. Robles even served as a stunt double for the film, adding an extra layer of realism. With this performance, Jerome proves he’s ready for more starring roles and has the chops to carry a feature film.

A Stellar Supporting Cast
Jennifer Lopez delivers an applaudable performance as Judy Robles, Anthony’s fiercely supportive mother. Lopez brings warmth and strength to the role, embodying a mother’s relentless love and determination to see her child succeed. The film also explores Judy’s own struggles, from enduring an abusive relationship to overcoming emotional and psychological hurdles as a single mother. Her moments with Jerome form the emotional backbone of the story, grounding it in their unshakeable bond.
Lopez has spoken about how much she drew from Judy’s real-life experiences to prepare for the role. In fact, she’s said that Judy’s story alone could inspire another film, especially her pursuit of education and unwavering support for her children.
The supporting cast further enriches the film. Bobby Cannavale is pitch-perfect as Anthony’s stepdad, a character you’ll love to hate for his toxic and dismissive attitude. This role showcases Cannavale’s range, as he steps away from his typically lovable characters to fully embody this antagonistic presence.
Michael Peña adds sweetness and quiet encouragement as Anthony’s high school wrestling coach, while Don Cheadle shines as Sean Charles, the USC college wrestling coach who recognizes Anthony’s potential after seeing his perseverance firsthand. Each actor contributes to the film’s depth, making Anthony’s victory feel like a collective triumph.
Immersive Wrestling Scenes That Pack a Punch
William Goldenberg’s direction truly shines in the wrestling sequences. The matches are intense, immersive, and pulse-pounding, capturing the sport’s physicality and strategy. The camera work puts you right in the action, making every move and takedown feel visceral and impactful. These scenes are best experienced in a theater, where the energy is amplified by a powerful score. Echoing the emotional highs of classics like Rocky, these moments will have audiences holding their breath.

Final Thoughts
Unstoppable is a must-watch for fans of sports dramas and stories of perseverance. Jharrel Jerome’s transformative performance, a stellar supporting cast, and gripping wrestling sequences make this film a powerful tribute to Anthony Robles’ legacy. It’s the kind of movie that leaves you teary-eyed and energized—a cinematic reminder that with dedication and heart, anything is possible.
For me, this film lands at a solid 7.5/10. It’s the closest thing to a Rocky movie we’ve had in the last few years! Watch now on Prime!
