There’s a lot to say about the relationship between humans and animals. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship shaped by behaviors essential to the health and well-being of both. There are so many emotional, psychological, and physical interactions between humans and animals. The bond has positive benefits for humans, such as reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and improved overall quality of life. The Sheep Detectives takes it a step further with animals helping humans solve murders. This is one of the most genuine and heartfelt movies I’ve seen in a while. 

The Sheep Detectives is the latest from director Kyle Balda (The Lorax, Minions). It is “shear” perfection (**I love a good dad joke). Everyone loves a bedtime story. George (Hugh Jackman) is a shepherd who reads detective novels to his beloved flock of sheep (voiced by Regina Hall, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, Rhys Darby) every night.

It’s a life of lush rolling green hills, quiet solitude, and beautiful sunsets. George and his sheep had a good thing going in their small town until chaos disrupted their life on the tranquil farm. Nothing ever happens in this small corner of the world. The townspeople don’t know how to handle it all. It’s a good thing the sheep do. These animals have been listening to every mystery novel George has ever read to them. Not only listening, but solving the crimes on their own. Now they are taking their skills from theory to practice.

The cast of The Sheep Detectives is fantastic. The actors on screen, as well as the voice actors for the sheep, make this more than just a children’s film. It’s a well-written who-done-it for the entire family. Hugh Jackman as the lead instantly projects calm, quiet worthiness. Everyone, of all ages, will be engaged, trying to solve the mystery for themselves.

This witty mystery film is based on the bestselling German novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann, in which sheep are brilliant crime-solvers. Humans are fumbling fools. This film is the perfect family movie, blending humor and intrigue. The sheep follow the clues and investigate human suspects. They learn more about themselves, their town, and their best human friend, George. You can tell this is a film designed, directed, and acted by people who cared first and foremost about bringing this great book to life.

Writer Craig Mazin (The Last of Us) crafts a story that entertains adults while exploring deep emotional themes—without ever leaving the younger audience behind. There are rules, of course. The sheep can talk to each other, but they can’t talk to humans. They can, however, understand humans, which makes for great comedic moments and a fantastic investigative journey. Who knew you could have so much fun with a sheep’s point of view?

The Sheep Detectives is a Knives Out (2019) meets Charlotte’s Web (2006) type of film. It explores friendship, death, grief, and the natural circle of life, while also examining loyalty, sacrifice, and the value of everyday life. It also centers on themes of moral decency, greed, and family dysfunction. Even with its plethora of themes, it’s the tone that sets the film. The Sheep Detectives is pastoral and gently bittersweet, balancing heartfelt warmth with an honest approach to life and death. The atmosphere is sympathetic, serene, magical, and at times sentimental.

The mix between live action and computer-generated animation is seamless. The animals actually look like they’re talking. Visual effects supervisor Graham Page excelled at bringing these creatures to life in extraordinary detail, along with creature supervisor Dorothy Ballarini, who led the team responsible for the sheep—from early concept discussions through scanning, modeling, and final animation.

This film is a fully envisioned world. It’s a classic murder mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie. This story is filled with an eclectic cast of suspects with colorful personalities and heightened sensibilities, and a band of fluffy detectives ready to solve the case. The Sheep Detectives will arrive in theaters on May 8, 2026.
