Shades of Strong®: How Shirl Hubbard Is Rewriting the Narrative of Strength for Black Women

For generations, Black women have been praised for their resilience, often at the expense of their well-being. But Shirl Hubbard, founder of Shades of Strong®, is leading a profound cultural shift: one that centers softness, support, and emotional liberation over the exhaustion of “being strong.” Through her pioneering framework, Support Languages™, Hubbard is creating space for Black women to receive care without guilt, shame, or apology.
Based in Ridgeland, Mississippi, Shades of Strong has been in business just over a year and is already transforming the way Black women understand their emotional needs. What began as Hubbard’s personal reckoning with burnout has grown into a movement of truth-telling, community building, and radical restoration.
The Birth of Support Languages™: A Framework Rooted in Lived Experience
Hubbard’s work emerged from a place so many Black women know intimately — the bone-deep tiredness that comes from carrying too much for too long. After years of being the fixer, the dependable one, the strong Black woman everyone leaned on, she realized she didn’t know how to let herself be supported.
Her search for a new way of being led to the creation of five Support Languages™:
- Emotional Safety
- Room to Breathe
- Mindful Care
- Being Seen
- Being Heard
These were personal discoveries as well as cultural truths. “These aren’t buzzwords,” Hubbard explains. “They’re ancestral needs. They’re what we’ve been denied, and what we’re reclaiming.”
From these languages, Shades of Strong grew into a suite of tools and community offerings, including:
• The Support Languages™ Companion Guide
A digital resource that helps Black women apply the framework in day-to-day life.
• One-on-One Support Sessions
Private spaces where Hubbard helps women explore their Support Language and unlearn the patterns tethered to struggle.
• The Support Languages™ Quiz
A free interactive quiz that thousands of Black women have turned to for clarity, validation, and self-understanding.
• Shades of Strong® Podcast
With over 200 episodes and 140,000+ listens, the podcast centers one unwavering message: you do not have to carry everything alone.
A Business Built From Truth, Not Trend
Launching a healing-centered platform in a world driven by aesthetics, virality, and “quick wins” has been one of Hubbard’s biggest challenges.
Her work is deep, emotional, and unfiltered — qualities that rarely fit the algorithmic mold. Add to that the reality of building without investors or industry connections, and her journey reflects what so many Black women founders face: creating something powerful with limited visibility.
But impact speaks for itself.
Women across generations, from teens to elders, have found language, relief, and community through Shades of Strong. Hubbard moves with consistency and purpose, choosing slow, authentic growth over shortcuts that dilute the message.
“This isn’t entrepreneurship for me,” she says. “It’s ministry. It’s movement work.”
Culture at the Core: Work That Feels Like Home
Every part of the Shades of Strong ecosystem reflects Black culture, lineage, and storytelling.
Hubbard writes and speaks in a tone that feels like sitting on the porch with someone who truly sees you. Her podcast is grounded in real-life conversations. Her quizzes and guides are infused with empathy. Even her email list is shaped with a warm, familiar energy.
And behind the work is a powerful spiritual moment: a dream conversation with her grandmother who passed in 2019. The symbolism of that dream — her grandmother asking Shirl to open the door — became confirmation that Shades of Strong is a generational assignment.
“This work,” she says, “is the door. And I’m holding it open for every Black woman who’s been waiting for someone to say, ‘You don’t have to do this by yourself.’”
A Vision of Liberation — One Black Woman at a Time

Shades of Strong exists to interrupt cycles of silence, self-sacrifice, and emotional suppression within the Black community. Hubbard’s vision is for Black women to see support, ease, and softness as birthrights, not rewards.
She hopes the framework will help break generational patterns and create a cultural shift where asking for help is seen as strength, not weakness.
And beyond her clients, her greatest achievement is unfolding at home. Hubbard has watched her adult daughters integrate the Support Languages into how they parent her granddaughters, asking what they need, modeling softness, and nurturing emotional safety.
“That tells me the work is working,” she says. “Not just for me, but for the next generation.”
