This month? We’re talking survival. Because let’s keep it a buck: the current job market is a straight-up hellscape, and Black women are being hit the hardest.

You’ve done the “right” things. The résumé’s tight. You networked. You kept it cute and kept it pushing. And yet? You’re watching jobs disappear, interviews ghost, and rejection emails pile up with alarming speed.

So today, I’m offering seven real-world strategies for navigating the chaos without losing your mind or your magic. Because while you may not be able to control the job market, you can absolutely control how you move through it with your clarity, strategy, and sanity intact.

1. Take a Social Media Cleanse

Before you refresh that social media feed for the 50-leventh time, log out, sis. The constant stream of “I’m excited to share…” posts on LinkedIn or productivity reels on TikTok can do more harm than good. Take a break from the comparison cycle (aka the doomscroll) and reclaim your mental bandwidth.

2. Use LinkedIn But Not Exclusively

LinkedIn is a helpful tool, not the whole toolbox. Apply directly on company websites, explore niche industry boards, and dig into community-based job resources. Sometimes the real opportunity isn’t in your feed, it’s in the sidebar. Places like Dice.com, Indeed.com, and FlexJobs.com are just a few alternatives to consider.

3. Automate the Job Hunt

Job hunting should not feel like a second full-time job. Platforms like JobHire.ai, LazyApply, LoopCV, and Sonara will apply to hundreds of jobs on your behalf. Let AI scale your outreach while you focus on interviews, rest, or regrouping. If companies can use AI to screen you out, why not return the favor? You have better things to do with your time than spend hours a day hunting and applying. The trick with this approach is to customize and refine those filters.

4. Reintroduce Yourself to Staffing Agencies

Let me say this real loud for the people in the back: you are the talent. Staffing agencies exist because of you. The right agency can open doors you didn’t even know were there. Be clear about your rate, your boundaries, and your brilliance. Then let them work for you. I have used staffing agencies since 2005 and as a Black woman, they have been a protective and underrated resource.

5. Turn Survival into Strategy

That freelance gig, that short-term contract, that “make-it-work” job? List it. Brand it. Name it. You weren’t desperate, you were resourceful. Reframe your pivots as strategy on your résumé, because that’s exactly what they were.

6. Freelance for Now, Get Free Later

Whether it’s Upwork, Contra, Fiverr, or PeoplePerHour, these platforms let you monetize your skills quickly while staying in control of your time. You don’t have to build an empire tomorrow, but a paid gig today might be exactly what you need. Even a short-term contract or project in the midst of your job search can give you a much-needed boost to keep going.

7. Filter Rejection Like a Pro

Getting one rejection after the next? Set up a Gmail our Outlook filter to auto-trash emails with key words or phrases like “we regret to inform you” or “unfortunately.” You’re not being petty you’re protecting your peace. Your inbox should not cause you emotional harm or fill you with dread at the thought of opening it.

This season isn’t about proving your worth. It’s about preserving it. Whether you’re pivoting, pausing, or powering through, know this: the game was never built for us. But we’re still here. Still sharp. Still shifting the board. Still building.

Because the game may be rigged, but baby, we’ve still got moves.
