Kindred Stories: Houston’s Black-Owned Bookstore Celebrating Diverse Voices

In the heart of Houston, Kindred Stories is a cultural hub and safe space for readers of color. Founded in 2021 by Terri Hamm, Kindred Stories was born from a deep love of reading and a powerful desire to create a community space where Black literature is prioritized, celebrated, and shared.

From Family Roots to Community Vision

The inspiration for Kindred Stories began years earlier, when Hamm’s daughter, Elle, fell in love with reading while the family was living in Singapore. Surrounded by limited representation, Elle’s discovery of books centering Black girls shaped her identity and fueled Hamm’s commitment to make such stories more accessible. After returning to Houston, Hamm realized that few physical spaces catered to Black readers. That vision of a third space—where community, culture, and literature intersect—became Kindred Stories.

A Bookstore That Puts Black Readers First

A Black author or another marginalized voice writes every book on the shelves. Each display highlights unique aspects of underrepresented storytelling, creating an environment where readers see themselves reflected and celebrated. The bookstore also hosts author talks, book clubs, and community events, fostering rich conversations and connections across the diaspora.

Hamm emphasizes, “Publishing and the business of books is often seen as a very white space. But Black and POC readers exist—they’ve just been waiting for bookstores, editors, and publicists who see them.”

Designed for Gathering, Built for Community

Even the interiors of Kindred Stories were created with intentionality. Partnering with Gin Design Group, Hamm ensured the space encourages gathering and honors storytelling traditions through thoughtful layouts, textures, and cultural details. The new, larger location reflects the community’s unwavering support and the bookstore’s rapid growth since its launch during the pandemic.

A Literary Home in Houston

Kindred Stories has quickly established itself as a beloved space where readers of color can feel at home, discover diverse stories, and be part of a vibrant literary community. Hamm reflects, “The way our customers light up when they visit our space feels like a major accomplishment every single time.”

With its growing presence, Kindred Stories is rewriting what it means to be a bookstore in Houston – one rooted in representation, community, and the transformative power of Black literature.
