Exclusive Interview with Jay Will: Exploring the Complexities of Rob Peace

In the film Rob Peace, Jay Will delivers a captivating portrayal of a young Black man whose promising future as a Yale graduate, Robert Peace, is derailed by his father’s wrongful imprisonment and his subsequent turn to drug dealing. Directed, written, and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, with Will stepping into the lead role, the film explores a poignant story of ambition, struggle, and family. Taji Mag was able to talk to Will about his performance in the film and what it was like working with Ejiofor.
Felipe Patterson: Jay, Rob Peace is an incredibly powerful film. Can you share a bit about how you prepared for such an emotionally intense role?
Jay Will: My preparation began with seeking blessings from Rob Peace’s family—his mother, uncle, cousins, everyone. They were the audience I wanted to honor with my portrayal. After getting their blessing, I immersed myself in the script and the book, and connected with people who knew Rob. I stayed close to his mother to capture his essence. On set, it was a collaborative process with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mary J. Blige, who plays Rob’s mother.
Felipe Patterson: Speaking of Mary J. Blige, she’s known for her powerful presence in both music and acting. How did working with her influence your performance?
Jay Will: Mary J. Blige brought a unique depth to the role of Jackie, Rob’s mother. She’s incredibly curious about her craft and always looking to deepen her performance. From our rehearsals, I learned a lot about the art of subtlety and presence. She’s also a talented musician, and her insights into blending different aspects of her artistry were inspiring.
Felipe Patterson: Balancing Rob Peace’s dual life—his career aspirations and his involvement in drug dealing—sounds challenging. How did you approach portraying this balance?
Jay Will: Balancing these worlds was challenging, especially with the high tension and paranoia in the story. It was important for me to stay true to Rob’s experience and my own sense of authenticity. After filming, processing those intense emotions was tough, but focusing on what serves me best and seeking therapy helped me manage that.
Felipe Patterson: You’ve mentioned that Rob Peace’s story resonated with you personally. Can you elaborate on how you relate to his experiences?
Jay Will: Rob’s story is about facing enormous challenges despite having so much potential. Personally, coming from a different background and excelling in an Ivy League environment was a unique experience for me. Rob’s ability to remain himself and not code-switch is something I deeply relate to. It’s about balancing different aspects of identity and staying true to oneself.
Felipe Patterson: What was it like working under the direction of Chiwetel Ejiofor, who also stars in the film?
Jay Will: Chiwetel Ejiofor is a master at his craft. He’s so dedicated and swift in his approach. Working with him was a learning experience. He encouraged a deeper exploration of the character’s dilemmas and internal conflicts, which is something I’ll carry forward in my career.

Felipe Patterson: If you could meet Rob Peace in person, what would you say to him?
Jay Will: I’d focus more on expressing my gratitude rather than asking questions. I’d thank him for sharing his story and serving his purpose, and I’d reassure him that his decisions, however difficult, were part of a meaningful journey. I’d also want to ensure his mother feels supported and blessed.
Felipe Patterson: Lastly, how does your music influence your acting, and what can audiences expect from your upcoming project?
Jay Will: My music plays a big role in my approach to acting. I have a project coming out in January under the name ‘Nu.eve’ inspired by a gritty, raw vibe similar to West Side Gunn and Benny the Butcher. My music, like my acting, is a way to express and channel different aspects of my experiences.
Felipe Patterson: Rob Peace tells a powerful story of ambition, struggle, and the impact of systemic challenges. What do you hope audiences take away from the film?
Jay Will: I hope audiences see the complexities and humanity in Rob’s story. It’s about more than just the struggles; it’s about the passion for family and the desire to bring people together despite the odds. It’s a film that invites deep conversations and reflection on the challenges faced by many.
