Imagine waking up in a remote cabin, recovering from a snake bite, only to discover that something’s terribly wrong. As you make your way into town to check on family, you realize a deadly, fast-spreading disease has wiped out most of humanity. With no phone and no one to call, you’re left to figure out who to trust in a world that has become unrecognizable. This is the chilling premise of Earth Abides, a new series based on George R. Stewart’s award-winning novel.

Starring Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games, Bad Boys) as Ish and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark) as Emma, the show delves into survival, trust, and human resilience in a post-apocalyptic world. Taji Mag sat down with the stars to discuss what sets the show apart, their character dynamics, and how the series explores the strength of human connection in a broken world.

Dapper Dr. Feel: What makes Earth Abides stand out among other post-apocalyptic stories?

Jessica Frances Dukes: “The hope and love at the heart of it. There are no zombies, aliens, or monsters. It’s about people—what we carry inside and how we choose to navigate the world. That’s the essence of the show.”

Alexander Ludwig: “Most post-apocalyptic tales focus on survival against monsters or pandemics, but this one is different. It’s about people trying to survive in a primitive world after having lived in a first-world society. The challenges they face are deeply human—whether it’s dealing with disease, having babies without doctors, or fighting off animals reclaiming the land.”

Dapper Dr. Feel: What is it about Ish and Emma that brings them together despite the chaos of the world?

Alexander Ludwig: “In another world, they might never have met. But under these unique circumstances, they connect. They fall in love for who they truly are, grounded in shared values and a sense of purpose. Their bond is about more than survival—it’s about mutual respect and a belief in something greater.”

Jessica Frances Dukes: “Emma believes she’s chosen for a purpose, and her journey is discovering what that purpose is. When she meets Ish, her sense of purpose evolves. Through their relationship, she learns not just about the world, but also herself. Their journey together is transformational, and it shows how love and human connection can be a beacon of hope in the darkest times.”

Dapper Dr. Feel: Alexander, as a father, what advice would you give Ish in Earth Abides?

Alexander Ludwig: “There’s a quote I love: ‘While you’re trying to teach your kids about life, they’re teaching you what life is really about.’ When it comes to family, my advice would be to simply be there. Nothing is more important than being present. Our careers may be important, but time with your loved ones is invaluable. One day, you might not have the chance to pick up your kids again, and that’s what keeps me grounded.”

Dapper Dr. Feel: Jessica, what advice would you give Emma?

Jessica Frances Dukes: “Emma taught me so much. She leads with her heart, not her head, and embraces vulnerability. She loves openly, even after the trauma of loss. If I could give her advice at the start of her journey, it would be: ‘Keep going. You’re a survivor, and I’m proud of you.”

Dapper Dr. Feel: If you could choose any character to join you in this post-apocalyptic world, who would it be and why?

Alexander Ludwig: “Emma, for sure! I think Jessica would agree.”

Jessica Frances Dukes: “Yes, I’d choose Emma too, but also Joey. His innocence and hopefulness are a reminder of the future we’re all fighting for. He symbolizes what’s worth saving—he carries a breath of life that gives hope to everyone around him. In this world, the children truly represent the future, and Joey embodies that beautifully.”

As Earth Abides premieres on Sunday, December 1, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on MGM+, viewers can expect a slow burn that digs into the essence of humanity. The series challenges audiences to reflect on survival, familial bonds, and the enduring power of hope in a world on the brink of collapse. Tune in to the first two episodes to witness this thought-provoking journey—will humanity’s spark endure, or will it flicker out?
