Brian Tyree Henry: “I Love Being Known for Dope Thief”
During the African American Film Critics Association roundtable for the Apple TV series Dope Thief, I had the chance to pose a question to the immensely talented Brian Tyree Henry about his role. Henry delivers one of the best performances on television as Ray Driscoll, a conflicted small-town hustler, pulled into a dangerous scheme. But I wanted to know: what would audiences think of him if Dope Thief were their very first introduction? Would they view Ray as a relatable, flawed protagonist or dismiss him as another troubled lead in a crime drama?
Henry shared a story about how a fan recently recognized him specifically for Dope Thief, rather than as Paperboy from Atlanta, a role that still defines much of his public perception. For Henry, it’s never been about whether people like his characters; it’s about whether they see something genuine in them.
