Black Women Are the Economy, But Here’s How We Can All Tap In

Black women are the economy by Nikki Porcher

When we hear the word “economy,” most people think of charts, graphs and or financial terms that feel completely out of touch with our daily lives. But here’s the thing: Black Women are the economy. Our innovation, resilience, and brilliance are the driving forces behind industries, businesses, and communities.

We’ve all seen the stats, Black Women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S. and that we own more than 2.7 million businesses. But here’s the hard truth: Even though Black Women are an economic force, we often have to run these 2.7 million businesses with far fewer resources than others. Black Women see less than 1% for every dollar raised in venture capital. (Yes, you read that right.)

But here’s where you come in.

We Need You To Make This Work

Every time you spend a dollar, you’re making a choice about what you want to see more of in the world. When you choose to Buy From A Black Woman, you’re not just getting a product or service, you’re making an investment in equity and economic justice. Because when Black Women create, we don’t just make businesses, we build ecosystems.

Every product we sell, and service we provide creates a ripple effect. It’s not just about the Black Woman running the business, it’s about the families she supports, the employees she hires, and the communities she uplifts.

How to Tap In

Black Women are the economy, but we can’t grow alone. Here’s how you can be part of the movement:

  1. Start local: Look around your own community. Whether it’s a nail salon, a bookstore, or a yoga studio, find a Black Woman-owned business and commit to supporting them regularly.
  2. Use directories: Platforms like the Buy From A Black Woman Directory make it easy to find Black Women-owned businesses online if there aren’t any in your neighborhood.
  3. Partner up: If you’re a business owner, consider how to team up with a Black woman entrepreneur. Joint ventures, sponsorships, and collaborations create opportunities for everyone.

Be intentional about where you spend your money. Every purchase has power.

Let’s Build Together

When I say Black Women are the economy, I’m not being dramatic, I’m stating facts. Black Women are building businesses, creating jobs, and driving innovation in ways that keep entire industries moving.

Collaboration isn’t just a nice idea, it’s the key to creating a thriving, equitable world. When we work together, we all win. So the next time you come across a Black Woman-owned business, support it. Because every time you do, you’re not just buying a product or service, you’re uplifting a community, creating new opportunities, and helping redefine what the economy looks like.

Black Women are here. The question is, are you showing up for us?
