From the moment Aaron Pierre steps onto the screen as Terry Richmond in Rebel Ridge on Netflix, you know you’re in for something special. With his towering 6’3 frame and calm yet commanding presence, Pierre embodies a character who’s both physically imposing and deeply principled—a man shaped by his years of service and guided by a strong moral compass. Terry’s journey from trying to navigate a corrupt system to taking matters into his own hands is at the heart of the film, and it’s Pierre’s performance that makes this gritty action thriller truly memorable.
The film’s opening sets the tone perfectly, gripping you with a tense, uncomfortable scene that, for many, will hit close to home for me. Terry, just trying to mind his own business, gets pulled over after being knocked off his bike by a local officer. It’s a scene packed with tension, made even more relatable for those who’ve experienced or witnessed the fear and frustration that come with being unfairly targeted. Terry, battered and bruised, keeps his cool, following the officer’s commands and trying to de-escalate the situation. You can see it in his eyes—he just wants to get this over with. Trust this scene boiled my blood. But things take a turn when the officer decides to pocket the cash Terry had painstakingly saved to bail out his cousin. In that moment, you realize this film is about more than just action; it’s about justice, dignity, and what happens when the system pushes a good man too far.
Also, the supporting cast was serviceable in their roles, but it was Don Johnson, Mr. Miami Vice himself, who stood out alongside Pierre. As the arrogant and crooked police chief Sandy Burne, Johnson really made me despise the character—something I never thought I’d feel about him, which is a testament to his performance. His reaction when he realizes just how big of a threat Pierre’s character is had me cracking up; it was like watching Ric Flair cower after annoying Hulk Hogan.

What makes Rebel Ridge stand out is how Terry handles the corruption around him. He’s not your typical action hero running around with guns blazing; instead, he takes a more strategic, almost methodical approach. Picture Batman, but without the cape and gadgets—Terry is all about skill and precision. He chokes people out, breaks bones, and takes down enemies with a quiet, lethal efficiency that’s captivating to watch. And what’s even more impressive? He does it all without crossing that moral line. Despite having the power to end lives, Terry holds back, choosing not to kill—even when he’s being shot at. That kind of restraint says a lot about his character and makes him even more compelling as a hero.
The pacing of the film is decent, with the tension steadily building as Terry moves from trying to resolve things peacefully to taking matters into his own hands. The initial legal and diplomatic route makes sense for a man like Terry, who wants to do things the right way. But when the corrupt system starts chipping away at everything he holds dear, we see him shift gears, and that’s when things really heat up. Watching the officers and everyone else realize they’ve seriously underestimated this guy is both satisfying and a little bit hilarious. One of my favorite moments is when Chief Sandy Burne learns about Terry’s background—his elite military training, survival skills, and tactical expertise. You can practically see the panic set in as the chief realizes what kind of monster they’ve unleashed.
There’s something particularly satisfying about a character like Terry, who’s capable of camping out in the woods with nothing but minimal supplies, making his own fire, and generally being an all-around badass. He’s the kind of hero who doesn’t need flashy weapons or high-tech gadgets to get the job done. He’s resourceful, disciplined, and relentless in his pursuit of justice. And yet, he’s not a one-dimensional action figure—Pierre infuses Terry with depth, showing us a man who’s both tough and thoughtful, hardened yet restrained.
Fun Fact: John Boyega was originally attached to play Terry Richards in 2019.
The film also benefits from its well-paced action sequences. Each fight or confrontation is carefully crafted, never feeling overly drawn out or gratuitous. The choreography is entertaining, and Pierre moves with a fluidity that makes the hand-to-hand combat scenes especially engaging. You get the sense that Terry is always in control, even when the odds are stacked against him. He’s calculated, and you can feel the weight of every punch, every chokehold. This is a man who’s seen it all and knows exactly how to handle himself in any situation. There are some moments where Terry does yell out of excitement and breaks his calm demeanor, but could be from the excitement and thrills he gets from some of his actions.
While Rebel Ridge delivers in the action department, it also has some quieter moments that add depth to the story. Terry isn’t just fighting for the sake of it—he’s driven by a sense of honor and justice. The film makes it clear that this isn’t just another action flick where the hero mows down bad guys without a second thought.

There are some scenario’s there aren’t realistic when Terry takes on the police force, but it’s action movie it’s to be expected. Also, the story isn’t as strong as I’d like. Still, the film remains engaging throughout, thanks in large part to its star. In the end, Rebel Ridge is a satisfyingly good action film that deserves to be part of a larger franchise (y’all can make it be known on social media). Pierre’s commanding performance as a hero who fights for justice and honor is the highlight of the movie, and he’s clearly a blossoming star capable of tackling a wide range of roles, including action. His portrayal of Terry Richmond is both fierce and nuanced, making him a character you can’t help but admire. For that, I give Rebel Ridge a solid 8/10. It’s definitely worth checking out—especially if you’re a fan of smart, action-packed films.
